The part number is 31A-25190. Seems to be a good supply of them on eBay. Or maybe someone around here has one and is willing to play "let's make a deal".

That little gear unit is pretty simple - hard to think of how it would fail so bad. Has anyone seen one fail?

I guess if it ran without any lubrication maybe it would eat itself, but it just seems like there are weaker points in the system that would be more likely - like the meter clutch or the cable.

When was the last time you had the wheel off to see what it looks like in there?

Just took the wheel off. Drive unit has the large gear held in place by a circlip ,between this circlip and the gear is a flat washer. This washer was worn and cupped a bit. This I think allowed the gear to go out of mesh. I should have made up a thicker washer but for a farmer fix I just bent the washer in a few places to take up the slack. Now works. For a while anyhow. Thanks to the above for the help!

BTW, the meter clutch and retainer are available and not expensive.
