So i have eluded to the fact my speedo hasn't worked and gotten some good responses from people.

I got a semi-nice day today worth of looking, pictures, notes, and time spent looking at the bike and wanted to show you what I saw in response to what members have said. It looks like the cable is what's toast but I wanted to show you all since someone had mentioned a dogtooth gear to look at... and I am not sure where I'd be looking for that.... So now, in pictures...

This is where my speedo cable goes

This is the end of my speedo cable when removed, it looked pretty toast to me and since a new one was only 10 bux... I went ahead and ordered one.

Some members had mentioned a dogtooth inside...
I'm not sure where that would be....

and this is the other end that goes into the meter....

It could be the gearing inside the wheel hub, although there's not much room for it to move or come out.

If you take the front wheel off, you can clean out the speedo gearing, since it's probably filled with dirt and road grime, and it's likely the gears could be stuck or broken -- that is if the new cable doesn't fix it. Let's hope it's not the instrument cluster, lol.

I'm going to be taking the front wheel off to do the tire here soon

So yes, I'll be able to clean out the gearing, is it easily accessible? Obviously in front or.... I know, NooB but I'm asking anyways.

First, loosen the two hex screws on the front of the left shock that hold the axle tight (I forget the technical term for them), then unscrew the axle. Once you slide the axle out and the wheel is off, the speedo assembly basically falls off the left side of the wheel.

Just spray it out with some sort of degreaser and then lube it up real nice. Not sure what kind of lube is the best for gears. Someone else might have some input on that. You'll see how it goes back in.

You can get the wheel off without removing the front brake, but it helps to have the brake off when putting the wheel back on.

Makes sense about the brakes, thanks, same with the advice on the speedo-assembly. I can't wait for my new tires/battery/parts/parts/parts!!!!

Just got my new shock in the mail so I know what I'm doing after work tomorrow.

It'd be a miracle if that speedo cable isn't broken. If the odometer doesn't work either that cable is almost certain to be the problem.

I'm pretty sure that end piece being mangled is my culprit but since I'm doing the tires anyways i'll be interested to see about the assembly inside

There is a stamped metal piece with "ears" on it that engages the wheel and the speedo drive. If everything isn't in place, the ears can get mashed flat instead of engaging and it won't work.

I highly doubt that's your problem; more likely the cable based on your picture.

You can use an axle/chassis/bearing type grease in the speedo drive gearbox.

LUBE THE NEW CABLE BEFORE YOU INSTALL IT!!! (and not with WD40.)

Yes, but not sure what bike your running that it'd fit too, if you updated your profile with your bike info in your signature it'd help.

On mine the rebuild kit is about 8-15 bux, a new speedo on ebay is 15..... just buy the whole unit if you find one

oh yea, i found the cables for 16 bux on bikebandit.

but my issue was the end of the cable rusted and stuck in the drive unit.
i ended up dissembling the drive and soaking the pinion portion of the drive in penetrating oil then drilled and removed the stuck portion of the cable end.
