So great sunny warm day for a change and wife told me to go fora ride:D Take off bike running great get 45 miles out stop a light ...What is that noise? Oh I know what it is SPEEDO nurse it home needle vibrating but still registering. Get . me disconnect cable and as expected noise went away... pull cluster tore down pulled speedo...the flywheel barely turns .Lubed and worked it back and forth a few times reassembled and drum roll it works as it should no howling :) but it is now cooling off so I decided to call it a day got 72 miles today. I have fixed a few speedos on my Vw's so if your carefull it can be done.

    Hazzah!

Just had exactly the same thing happen to me a couple minutes ago. Got off the freeway on my way to work, popped open my visor as I slowed from way-way-fast to merely way-fast and was greeted by this crazy howling matching bike speed but not RPM. After a panic filled check for something rubbing on my tire (I've never heard a speedo do that before), a quick bit of feeling about after I got moving again quickly showed the speedo to be the culprit.

Anyways, a couple questions good sir: what lubricant would you recommend, and any pointers for one who's never seen the inside of a mechanical speedo before?

On the Maxim pull 2 bolts on headlight bucket pull it away there should be 2 bolts on cluster remove them pull up and remove cover on back of cluster . Remove the trip odometer needle turning backwards there are some screws on back of speedo , once pulled speedo should come free of cover DO Not touch face of speedo ( finger prints are not nice to look at when you can't get to them after your done lol) look at back of speedo you will see a small fly wheel if it is starting to seize it will be difficult to turn. I used a nozzle and PB blaster short spray , worked it back and forth till it turned freely , and put a light smear of grease on the drive gears . Put is back tougher and she is nice and quite now. My Seca has a different cluster but the Maxim is similar . Just be gentle with this there is a spring you don't want to disturb so Do Not pull on the needle!!!
