    Hi!

Have a Yamaha Xj 650 -82 where the speedometer are starting to act like it´s worn out?
It vibrates both on the needle and a clear vibrating sound from the housing while driving. Also a "squeeking noice" like metal against metal.

Have checked the wheel hub, cleaned and lubed. Same with the cable. Looks alright on both of them.
Have removed the speedometer housing, loosened the glass and got into the speedometer.
Did unfortunately not take any pictures...

But there is a "magnetic" wheel that spins with cable at speed.
But this magnetic wheel are touching the brace, or bracket that I guess holds some opposite part. This is covered with at metallic cup that then goes with a shaft up to the needle. All moved freely. It looks and feels that the magnetic wheel are rubbing against the metal. And this wheel can move a little up and down. Is this normal?

And is this a "normal" wear?
Can this be fixed or is a new speedometer the only fix?

I had similar recently (XJ550). I had it apart and applied some gresae to all the gears and worm drive(?) that operates the odometers.
I added a drop of GT85 light oil onto the needle bearing (such that it is). I seems a lot better and it was making a horrendous squealing sound prior.
Is it fixed? Time will tell

I noticed on mine that the male thread that the cable threads on, at the Speedo, has broken away and was loose and I had/have the same issue with the rubbing internally and noises etc.

I made a little plate that goes between the two screws outside the Speedo housing where that threaded part is and this wedges the thread part up against the Speedo. Bit hinky. But that looseness isn't supposed to be there.

Currently looking for a replacement also.

Found a picture how it basically looks. On my speedometer, it is the flywheel that moves up and down very easily. The whole driveshaft and flyweel, when speed cable is inserted moved upwards and rubs against the cross-member that is between the flywheel and the "drag cup".

Should this drive chaft and flywheel be able to easily move up and down?

No. That's the bit that came away on mine. It seems to be pressed into the chassis of the Speedo but I guess the mechanical force of the cable moving about detaches it and the whole thing flops about.

    Aha.
    I see.

Will try to fixate the drive shaft and flywheel and see what happends.
Have a new speedocable on the way home and it will probably not make it worse. Have also lubed the odometer gearing when I had it open.

Will try to return with the result.
    Thanks "cds1984"!

I have found several vendors online refurbishing motorcycle instruments.
Just wondering if anyone has had this done and what the cost would be, likely not cheap.

When it comes to electronic tachs one vendor just scraps the OEM circuit and installs his own board.

I bought a cheap HUD GPS speed unit and cable tied in onto my fairing frame years ago.
I trust it more than the mechanical Speedo and I haven't got a speeding ticket yet.
HUD is the way to go but I'm still to find something with indicators and fuel.
When I do the xj cluster is gone.

Obviously a fairing and sun orientation are the issue on that though.

The quick fix solution for me is four small washers. When installed, they keep the inserted part of the speedcable from pushing hard on the driveshaft and lifting the flywheel.

Have tried and it works! A small ”flutter ” on the needle when driving but the vibrating noice is gone.
