Make sure that the ends of the speedo are completely in the holes they need to be in. Also, if you took the speedo hub off of the wheel, you may have not gotten the two tangs into the slots on the rim correctly. IF they aren't lined up right, then they bend and then there's no speedo.

Both instruments are fully mechanical, cable driven. To troubleshoot either: Start at the top, disconnect cable from instrument and either run engine (tach) or spin front wheel (speedo) and see if the cable is turning.

Could be the instruments themselves: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html

Tach drive (the article is about replacing the oil seals but you can see how it goes together, and what the gear looks like) http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19538.html

Seca 550 instrument cluster removal and disassembly: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14948.html

And for the speedo drive, check what hogfiddles suggested if the speedo cable isn't turning.
