Well it was certainly chilly this morn (29 deg F) when I left for work. As soon as I started rolling, I hear this nasty, high pitched squealing from the Atari.

I'm guessing it's the speedometer gears. Can anyone recommend a service procedure? Should I unhook the cable until I service?

That's funny. I have the same problem. It is the second time I replace the Atari so, This time I am going high tech. I will replace the Atari for the Vapor gauges.

This is a common problem. It's the nylon gears that need to be greased. Just take it apart and re-grease the gear (it's pretty straightforward)

But the gauges are so heinously ugly looking, might as well just get some cool new gauges from mikesxs.

Why, yes... we can. I too have dealt with this.

This file will describe how to take the cluster off and break it down.

This other file, compiled from a post by BigFitz52, shows what needs to be lubricated and where.

It's not the gears. It's more likely the input bushing. Read the docs Schmuck posted the links to, my article on the instruments explains where to lube to have the best results.

I can also be the cable, or be contributed to by the cable. But the really loud screaming is the instument's input bushing.

Ask and ye shall recieve! Thanks men. I'm on it. I replaced the cable last year. Should be good. I'm gonna check to see if chacal has a new instrument face. Mine, like many others I've seen, is distorted from heat. I'm not sure what caused this. It was that way when I bought it. My brother had an 82 XJ750J that did the same thing. Could it be caused by the original lousy fuse box? I've converted to blade fuses long ago.

Bushing* sorry, It's been a year or so since I did mine.

Yes, fitz is correct. It's the bushing. All it needs is grease.

From my experience, if the noise is loud enough to be noticed, it's the bushing that's worn. The cable tends to wine a bit, not howl.

Still, wouldn't hurt to clean and re-lube the cable.
