Recently I saw sport rack mount brackets (sans the actual sport rack itself) for sale on ebay that was supposedly an OEM part for the Maxim-X. But I can't find any mention of the actually rack itself anywhere. The part number for the mounting brackets was even given.

Has anyone every seen such a rack? Does it really exist? What does it look like?

    I'd love to have one!

Artie, what do you mean by a "sport rack"? Do you mean the little factory aluminum rack used with the tall grab bar?

    Because if you do..........

Allow me to introduce to you, The Yamaha Sportrack! NOS, no less... Or, as I like to call it, My Retirement Plan.

They serve almost no practical purpose as they have a max load weight of something like 6lbs, but people go crazy for them anyway. I have another one that's been well used that I got for a steal in a package deal with a MaximX backrest. 8)

The Sportrack itself was used on the '85/86 Maxims as well as a bunch of years worth of Viragos and V-Maxes. Only difference between the models would've been the mounting brackets.

    Yep, that's the litle pup!

Got one hanging off the back of a parts bike here, along with the tall grab bar. Missing the backrest pad assembly. Would need polishing to be really purty.........

Artie, what was the part number for the Max-X brackets kit?

The part number for the brackets is ABA-1AA51-40-00. I assume the part number for the rack is ABA-42H51-10-00 as shown on the side of MaximumX's box.

I can probably get the brackets off of ebay (probably)...but I'm sensing assembling this whole thing is going to fund someone's retirement plan. <grin>

My X has the full/tall backrest with the pad (which I'm going to have recovered soon).

What am I looking at here for cost?

Hey XX. Yeah, it was on eBay a couple months ago. Wasn't cheep, but I got it for less than I've seen some used ones go for. And I'll do a deal with the devil as long as the shipping is quick and the rates are fair.

And Len... I believe the part# for the MaxX Sportrak brackets is ABB-1AA51-40-00. At least that's what it says on the box mine came in. Dunno if the number would be different for the airhead 700. Maybe I'll check the XJ Xref on my contraband XJCD. Unless anyone has any objections...

Artie: If you're watching eBay for the Sportrak, search for Virago and Vmax too, rather than just Maxim. They come up more frequently for those models, but on the other hand, there are more Virago and Vmax owners out there looking for them so bidding can get a little out of hand.

Hmmmm... Found THIS while browsing for a Sportrak for Artie. That's actually a really good price for a Buy-it-Now. I'd snap it up if I didn't already have more backrests than bikes...

Holy Hannah Montana! I have a "six-pack rack" and back rest on my 700. I'm sitting on a gold mine.
Well, actually, in front of it.:)

I have 5 or six of them, maybe more, two are still taped in the plastic in the box, along with the original installation instructions..... and some are on bikes.

Something another member and I have been working on--apparently there was also yet another set of brackets for the X and the airheads that allows the '6-pack' rack to be installed with just the low grab bar, not the tall bar/backrest. THOSE brackets are even more uncommon--I've only ever heard about them, and have the part number, as well. SO......through some observation, very little trial and no error, I figured out what the difference is. I mocked up a pair and then had a pair formed. They are painted and ready to go out in the mail to one of our list members who will be installing them on his bike shortly.

But yes, the rack is the same rack as on the other bikes, mentioned.....it's just the mounting brackets that are different. Now that THAT cat is out of the bag, I guess I won't be able to snag them anymore.

Hey, here's an idea--DON'T TELL ANYONE WHERE THE RARE PARTS ARE (some of us know and like to snag 'em when we can!!).........LOL
