Welcome themidnightspecial. Start off by telling us what you have to start with. Better yet, post a picture here so we can see your bike. Then I would recommend you PM Foximus and send him the link to this thread and ask him to chime in here. What is your budget for this project and how handy are you?

Well I have a 1983 XJ750 "midnight special" just like this one in this picture.
    http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2005%5C09%5 ... 7-full.jpg
what I would like to do is making it into a more sporty crotch-rocket style type bike.Like that pic I showed before....You know, get rid of that nasty seat, and get a one seater....and make it cool looking...Im thinking about putting 2 Hella Optilux Halo Driving lights, and a Hella Projector right ... My budget is about 800 - 1200 dollars!
    THanks Guys

Yeh, i'm also looking to do a single seater mod on my recently purchased '82 maxum 650. Also a rear fender mod much like the one in that pic. I have ideas, but I'm looking for any how to's, close up pics or suggestions before I start cutting. Anyone, anyone?

Hey, Glad i like you guys like my bike. As for Budget, you can do everything i did for under $150. I made the rear fender with a piece of 12 guage mild steel, started cutting and shaping and thats what i ended up with, I love bobbed looks. The seat i kept the stock pan, Trimmed some of the plastic narrower so the seat slims up in the front and rear, then used adhesive spray and carpet foam in 5 layers, carving it to the shape i liked. Then stretched and stapled marine grade vinyl over it. Use super bike bars that are lower, and I totally redid the control box into a little nifty LED box that hangs under the Bars in the middle. That was the most difficult part. And the tail light and Licence plate hanger I recently redid, ill have to take new pictures.

The only bad thing about my bike is ive got a fuel leak from the petcock and carb #4 which is making some of my black paint run nasty. There are more pictures in my gallery. If you need any help id gladly be of assistance.

Yeah man...if you could give me some instruction and pics how you did that..I would be forever grateful. Because Im getting rid of my fender...but I have no Idea how to add a brake light, or turning signals.. But also what do you guys think about adding to sport cans...to get rid of those old black pipes. Im going to add these http://www.danddexhaust.com/news/2006/08/test_site.htm on the orginal piping? Do you think it would work?...it would be dual...

Sure ill help you out in anyway i can... Ill draw an outline of my fender if you want.

As for the cans... yea it would work, however i hate the sport can look unless its the new under the fender type deals. Otherwise they just dont flush in with the design of motorcycles... I personally like mine, I think they worked out perfectly, they are just Chrome tips off a camero or truck style exhaust that i picked up at advanced and made a baffle to rivit inside it to turn it into a muffler.

Lighting is easy as hell as LONG as you buy the right stuff to do it with. Your key source will be ebay.

I'm not looking to fab anything from scratch, but rather mod existing hardware. The rear fender will be relocated and the seat, well, I planned on doing exactly as you did. Modify the existing pan, and reupholster it with some suede. Your bike is surely a step in the direction I'm looking to go, Nice ride fox...

Here's what I did with mine. Need to get an updated pic, been to busy riding it to clean it and take pics though!

I didn't go for a real "crotch-rocket" style, but I did go for a sportier styled Maxim, and did it all for next to nothing.

The exhaust is a Mac 4-2 which I got used off of one of my parts bikes. The headlight is dropped with a custom bracket (yes, it points towards the ground now), the rear fender is the stock piece with a good hunk sliced off of it, and new holes drilled for mounting. Painted all the other trim black, and put on some cat-eye mini-stalks. Also dropped the guages down to match the dropped headlight.

Just another idea if you decide you want to keep the rear seat (which I did). I'll be building a much more radical sport-style XJ starting in January of next year, I'll be sure to update you guys. It's going to be a blend of old school and new school looks, with a bit more of a drag-bike feel to it.

yeah....like that too me is sexy, but im looking at the real sporty type of bike...Im thinking about more of the street fighter style...take the exhaust underneath, or besides the seats....Raising the rear shocks up...which I dont know how to do....getting a rear set put on it...and hey guys....your opinion on these as head light.http://i3.ebayimg.com/01/i/08/b4/e8/66_2.JPG AND ALSO these http://www.tmfa.de/pics/hella/microde.JPG ....pair together as head lights....I want to be seen!

You're gonna be looking at a lot of wiring work for any of those headlights, because if you haven't seen already, almost all of the wiring for the entire bike runs though the headlight. Kinda the junction box for everything.

yeah Im going to use a small junction box! But do you think those would look good paired together guys? Also Foximus.....Man I want to have that type of exhaust like yours, but if I could I want to put it up under the seat.

I like the halo's better, but yeah, I like those. Thought of doing something similar on my bike when I was going to go solo seat with a CBR tail, give it a more modern look. But since I went for the bobbed/cafe look, I stuck with the big round headlight. So to sum up dual headlights = modern, big round = classic. Sounds like your going for the more modern look, so go for it!

I think personally you should stick with using only projector but use 3 of them.

Because those projectors are very small, and youd need to fill a space between the tubes, so make a triangle, have 2 on normally and the tip of the triangle come on as the bright. Or the other way, 1 on normally and the top 2 come on as the bright. Halo is neat and all, but highly impractically cause its just suckin juice off the already overloaded alternator and they iluminate nothing and cant be seen with a normal headlight in them, they get washed out. Just make sure to go through whatever type of dash you use and replace all the bulbs with LED's, and use LEDs for tail lights. Because thats a HUGE HUGE energy savings. Everything on my bike is LEDs now and I use a 65 watt silverstar bulb (extremely bright by the way) for the headlight and I cant get it to dim at all.

For the exhaust, what you can do is remove that 4-2 baffle box and dump both pipes into 1 of the camero style exhaust tubes. youd have 2 immediately under the bike cut offs facing opposite directions. Youd just have to buy one of those rivet in baffles to majorly increase the backpressure. I think itd look awesome.

check that place out if you want a new dash guys...it's tight...but yeah that just some of the mods. Im going to take your advice and just get some aluminum exhaust piping make my own underseat exhaust.

the lower grade stainlesss steel. Not the top notch stuff, just lower grade. The higher grade stainless steels are very hard and dont do well under vibration. They get metal fatigue stress cracks quickly. I know some of the older maxims had a 2-1 down pipe with a crossover stock instead of the resonance box. You could probly grab one of these and chop it up instead of having to bend and weld new ones.

Hey Foximus, whose brand/which style LED bulbs did you use in your tails, turns, and dash lights? How bright are they compared to stock incaedecents?

Man the 2700 is wicked. It's so replacing my whole ugly box. I'll be sorry to see the fuel gauge go, but it's way worth it. The magnetic speedometer means I don't have to fix my cable too.

one of the things that I have done with my '81 xj750 seca was put a kawasaki 1994 (any year from '94 up should work.) ninja 500r front end on the bike. I used the front forks, wheel, brakes, bars, and tripple tree. In order for me to get it to work using the steering head bearings was to use the lower bearings from the xj and the upper bearings from the 500r. After completion, it lowered the bike about 1/2", decreased the rake to 24.5 degrees, and got rid of the leading axle on the thing. I painted it all black including the wheels and even though the rims don't match, It makes one hell of a sweet looking, and handling bike. seems like it would go great with the tail sections seen here. One thing though, I only used the 500r forks because I had a salvage 500r here, but I would love to see if I could get some adjustable cartridge style front forks for the thing. I'll try to post some pics of the bike when I am completely finished with it. (repainting and rewiring)
