Hi all, long (very) time since my last post. I have a 1982 Maxim XJ750 that i just got back on the road this year. I had been saving for a newer bike and was planning to sell the XJ but things changed and it turned out i needed a new cargo van more than a new bike, so the XJ is here to stay for a while.

First, Oil. its time for an oil change, but i cannot find my service manual and have no idea how much oil to put in during a change. Also looking for reccomendations for brands\weights to use. I live in Houston TX and afternoon temps are starting to get into the 90s so i need something that is going to handle the heat. Also thinking about switching to a synthetic oil Amsoil/Royal Purple? Any tips or info will be much appreciated.

Second, shocks and springs. Mine are still the stock units and the front springs are almost non existant.. Can someone point me to a good place to get the progressive springs for the forks, and which part number I should be looking for? Also, what is a good repalcement for the rear shocks. I weigh 260 and the Max is pretty much my daily driver.

    Thanks!

Your oil capacity is cast into the clutch cover in the vicinity of the filler hole; yours probably says "2500CM3" which means 2500CCs or 2.5 Liters.

You'll want to add an extra 300CCs or so because of the filter and to keep the oil level sensor happy.

Stay away from synthetics unless you go with a MOTORCYCLE-specific semi-synth. DO NOT use any automotive oil; specs have changed and they now all contain friction modifiers that wreak havoc with wet clutches.

Best practice is a conventional, motorcycle specific 20W50, like Castrol 4T.

Progressive Suspension's website can provide you with fork, shock and spring part numbers; or check with XJ4Ever (logo/link in site banner upper right.)
