I know a lot of bikes do this, but it drives me crazy. What is everyone's secret to stop the ever-so-annoying disc brake squeal? Would be interesting to hear what rider's do to eliminate it.

    Thanks
    Jamie

Well, if i ain't got an anti - squeal shim for the pads, i smear the back of the pads with something like copper grease, and if i've run out of that another type of grease, maybe a lithium spray grease.

Use this stuff on the back of the pads and where the pads fit into the calipers. Make sure they're clean first and also make sure you followed the proper bolt tightening sequence when the front wheel is removed and replaced, such as when you replace tires.

Jamie, the 1100s have the same calipers as the 550s; see diagram below.

If you're missing the PAD shims, say so; I have a diagram and dimensions so you can make up a set from some .015" stainless. You NEED them on this style caliper or it will squeal.

If you have the pad shims installed and it still squeals, pop the pads back out and chamfer the leading and trailing edges with a sharp file; about 1/4"~3/8" at a 45 degree angle to the edge.

Smearing stuff on the back of the piston-side pad will have no effect, and it's the one actually creating the sound, trust me. You can smear stuff on the back of the fixed pad if you want but it won't make much if any difference.
