I have a couple quick questions (the first of many). While removing the float bowls, a few of the float bowl screws had to be severely maimed in order to get them out. Are these screw's unique or can I pick them up at the local hardware store? After I got the float bowls out, I went to remove the float pins. Are the pins supposed to slide out easily? How much force should be applied to remove them?
This is my first crack at carbs so I figured I'd ask before I started ripping stuff apart and putting random screws into float bowls!

the float pins in my 85 xj700N slide out very easily. Be very careful or you can brake the float post and the carb will become junk.

The screws are all JIS.... If you're not using JIS screwdrivers, you're gonna maim them. you can replace the screws with US Metric equivalents no problem (replace all of them!)

I used hex screws so I could use an allen wrench. Much easier to take apart again later and less likely to strip them out again.

Thanks guys, I was aware that they are JIS. I will definitely swap them out with something else. I was leaning towards hex screws and Scuba finished selling me on that idea. Now I will tread lightly through the rest of this carb process. Wish me luck...

Here comes the next hiccup! The pilot jet in carb #2 is severely marred, black, stripped, ugly etc. How on God's green earth do I go about getting that bugger out? Thanks in advance!

Well, I had the same problem with my pilot jet and was able to get a small pair of vise grip pliers locked on it and turned. It made it much easier. Unfortunately now I need a new jet.

FINISHED!! That was very tedious and time consuming. It won't be nearly as difficult next time. Regardless, it's done and I didn't break anything!

on the mikuni carbs, those float pins can be really difficult, and you have to be VERY careful not to brake a float pillar arm.

Yea, I was worried sick the whole time...even putting the pins back in! I used the technique/trick outlined in this tutorial:

    http://www.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/gs/ ... torial.pdf

Nail setting punch to tap the pin out and a socket to support the pillar...worked like a charm
