A couple days ago I went to take the bike out of a quick spin and the motor turned over slow and I forgot to charge the battery up. So yesterday, I went to drive it into work and I just got the "click" from the solenoid. I threw it on the charger and took the car.

When I got home it was charged up. Push the button and nothing but "click". Tonight I put a multimeter on the solenoid and verified that the starter was getting power. I unbolted the starter and turned it by hand to see if it was locked up, it turned fine. I checked to see if the motor locked up, it also was fine.

I grounded the starter and pushed the button... nothing. I tapped on the case, figuring that it might be a hung brush... nothing. Spun it over by hand again and tried, finally it spun.

What gives? I don't want to get stuck somewhere, so I want to fix the issue.

I am assuming that these starters are rebuild-able, correct?

    Thanks guys.

Did you disconnect the battery from the bike before charging ? If not maybe you fried something ? I guess you checked the fuse ? I'm sure brush kits are available here, I have seen used starters too - maybe putting a volt meter on the power going to the starter to check for current when pushing the starter button would be a good idea - if you don't have a volt meter use any 12 volt bulb and attach wires to contact points on socket as a crude tester - who cares if it blows the bulb it will show you if current is running to starter. good luck

Yeh, take the starter apart & check / replace the brushes, spray contact cleaner in there until it runs out clear. Clean all the connections, battery, solenoid & ground wires.

In the meantime, learn how to bump start it, it won't leave you stranded. Been bump starting mine for over a month because of football season and haven't had time to take her apart.

Rock the bike back and forth in gear...see if the starter is just laying on a bad spot on the armature or something...

How certain are you this battery isn't toast? That's much more likely...

It appears that the electrical is good... I'm going to rebuild the starter while it's down for the season this winter.

And the list gets longer... lol.
