Hello intermittent starting issue. Most times it will start, but every once in a while it just spins. Minor problem to repair or major? I pulled the starter an it is just fine. I assume the bendix/clutch is in the case?
    time to split the motor?

Maybe. Several things to check first since that would be a big job. Make sure your battery fluid is full and it's fully charged. Make sure your starter relay is in good shape. Idea is any thing that can cause a voltage drop can cause the starter not to spin quickly enough.

I had this issue when I switched to synthetic oil. Going back to dino solved it. I also see it from time to time when the battery is weak from cranking during tuning.
