I just got my new starter motor in the mail, and when I put it on my bike, an interesting thing happened: when I pushed the starter button, the starter turned over, but then didn't stop when i took my finger off the button. also, the kill switch didn't do anything (in either direction), and even with the keys out of the ignition, it kept spinning. The only thing that stopped it was when the battery eventually died. Anyone have any ideas where/how to start testing?

Stuck starter solenoid. Under the seat (or maybe the right side cover, I don't know the 550 that well) with 2 big wires and 1 or 2 smaller wires running to it.

Sounds like the solenoid stuck. Try tapping it to see if it frees up. If the battery was low, the amps through the motor would have been high and may have "welded" it. Should that happen again, disconnect the battery rather than letting it "die". TO follow up , the solenoid is located under the right cover. It is easier to reach with the seat off.

Sounds like somebody needs a new solenoid.

you might want to make sure that you have the Positive on the battery connected to the right post as well, not sure how much fiddling around you did with it previously... or you need a new solenoid :p

Yup, you guys nailed it. Charged the battery back up, swapped out the solenoid, and sure enough, it started with no drama whatsoever. Thanks for the help!
