I have an 82 maxim 650. when I push the starter button the starter engages for a second and then just spins. is this a problem with the starter or the starter clutch. if its the starter..easy,if its the starter clutch...whats that like to replace?

If it's the starter clutch, you'll have to split the cases.

Are you running the correct oil ?
Is it worth repairing.........what's the bike worth, how many miles on the mill ?
It's a lot of work & there is NO shortcut.

I like how you put that: " there is NO shortcut".

yes I am running the right oil 10w40 silkolene,31k on the engine, paid $150 for the bike. still trying to get it running smooth...carbs were varnished and the #40 jets are chewed up(?),and there seems to be a vacuum leak as well. bike worth about $1000 in good shape, but not sure if its worth it to fix. do I need any special tools? pull the engine from the frame...as you said,a lot of work.
