Hey, i'm hoping you guys can help me diagnose a starting issue with my 1981 XJ550 Maxim. I'm not very active on here so I apologize if there's a relevant thread I might have missed.

The problem is when I try to start, the engine turns over and over but never fires. If I walk away and come back in about 20 - 30 minutes, the bike will start, no problem. It starts reliably like this every time. I just have to turn it over, then wait a while and try again, and it'll start. Any ideas?

New battery. New spark plugs. Rebuilt carbs. Float levels are within spec. New valve shims. I have not vacuum synced the carbs yet.

    Any help is appreciated.

How long does the bike sit when you notice this problem?
The fuel bowls are open to atmosphere, so sitting for more than a day or two will require priming the carbs before attempting to start.

I forgot to mention this only happens after the bike sits overnight. Unfortunately it’s unable to start the first attempt even after priming the carbs. If it’s already been running though, I can shut it off and start it up again within a couple hours no problem.
