I'm pondering replacing my 25 yr old factory brake line with stainless steel. Any recommendations for brand of brake line to use, or other general advice on the matter?

I replaced mine with Russel's universal hose. It's a SS hose with a clear protective wrap. With that and a couple banjo adapters, it works very well. Not only that, since my 81 only has one front unit, I did away with the two short hoses and ran just one long hose. This actually saved me a lot of money.

I did the same as Wink - replaced with one long line and got rid of the useless 90° bend in the middle.

One note that I'm not sure people understand -- "stainless steel line" is actually a teflon tube covered with steel braid for strength, then usually a clear coat for protection.

Anyway - I just ordered a 40" line, 1 straight banjo (master cylinder end), 1 30° bend banjo (caliper end) from my local dealer - was less than $50 and was money VERY well spent.

Braided lines dont expand like the rubber hose that came factory so you have stronger braking power. Iv used Russel lines on both my frount bracks and oil cooler with no problems.

Everyone I have ever talked with that changed-over to Stainless Brake Line has said that they got much better Braking Power out of their systems because of it.

It also makes for a very nice looking cosmetic mod; too!

It doesn't really matter what kind you get. Any that you can find that fits is better than the old rubber hose. I got some on ebay for a Harley that were $12 each and they work great.

I replaced the line on my '82 650 Maxim with a Galfer ss line from cyclebrakes.com. Awesome fit and finish, choice of colors, and no clunky adapters as found on universal lines. Great folks to deal with,as well.

Altus, wink, I'm trying to figure out the right adapter for a russel brake line. The banjo bolts - are they 10mm or 12mm? I used a 12mm wrench to take off the union bolt, not sure if that means the banjo is 12mm.

Nope - wrench size has nothing to do with it - you want the 10mm ones.

Correct. 10mm banjo's. You won't need the bolts, if you have the originals.

I highly recommend getting two 30* adapters. And you can tell from the one picture that the hose is an Earl's unit. I purchased all my parts from Jegs.
