steering head bearing replacement

    Hey guys,
    I'm going to be replacing the bearings in my steering head and I was wondering about a tool it looks like I need. I was looking in the service manual and it shows a picture of a pin spanner looking thing. Is there a standard size/type for the pin spanner tool I'll need?

    dunno , but if you know what your doin a pin puncn or similiar will do , or even multi's :)

    Hey PBR, you can use a pair of channel-lock pliers, just be sure to protect the adjuster nut with a rag (unless, of course, you don't really care about leaving the jaw impressions on the nut). Still have those turn signals for you, just trying to get some time to head out to your place.

    Thanks, that sounds cool and it'll be fun to do a little tool shopping. Robert, if I get this get these steering bearings worked out then it would make my bike a little more freeway safe so I could make my way up to your place one morning.

    Using a drift is pretty much the standard for loosening, tightening, and adjusting those locks.

    Just a word of caution. There are 19 loose Ball Bearings on the lower and upper races ... just waiting to be set free.

    If you dropped 19 Yamaha ball bearings, standing in a sealed, Plexiglas cube; when you pick them all up and count them ... you'll only have 18. One will disintegrate and never be seen again.

    This phenomenon has been observed by hundreds of shop technicians and Do-it-yourselfer's over the years.

    I submitted this phenomenon, in screenplay format, to the producers of "The X-Files."

    That's really fun. The bearings on my bicycle are exactly the same and when I rebuilt my hubs last week, one totally disappeared. I got some replacement bearings for the seca so hopefully I won't loose any of them and I'll have some spare's for people who loose them in the future.
