My keys cannot turn past the the steering lock.. I can see the plunger moving and the steering locks - but the key cannot turn to the lock position (to keep it there), or even to the next position where the brake lights come on.

I've even put lube into the key ring.

I guess maybe i'd have to look at this but if anyone has a simpler method of checking, it'd be much appreciated: http://www.xj4ever.com/clean%20and%20lu ... switch.pdf

    I've read this forum as well: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=4 ... +lock.html

Which bike is it? Are the handle bars turned all the way to the left (kick stand side and mostly used) or the right? Are you pressing the key inward (literally) prior to turning it?

No no. it actually used to work so I'm familiar with the operation. I can see the plunger moving.. but it cannot turn that extra bit to keep it in place. Also can't turn it past that certain point to initiate the parking brake.

sorry meant, red light parking brake... you know how when you go past steering lock and then it makes the red light stay ON?

PS - I actually don't know what that's for? Maybe if you had to leave your bike out in the open or something??

@ k-moe: Idk which model he has but on the 650 the last position on the ignition switch (past lock) will keep the front running lights (i've done the mod), tail light and license plate lit. Common on bikes so i know you already know.

Edit: @ Alain...It's a night riding safety feature. Makes your bike visible if your parked some where like under a over pass at night where there are no street lights.

I know about the light. I thought he might be using the term to describe something else.

The best course of action is to look carefully at the end of the lock plunger for it being mushroomed, or bent. It dosen't take much damage to keep the plunger from being able to fully engage. The other thing to do is take the lock off and inspect/ clean all of the associated parts.
