That's about right for a professionally rebuilt set of carbs. There's close to $200 in parts alone if everything perishable was replaced. A brand new set of four Mikuni carbs goes for over $1k, and that doesn't include all of the hardware to set them up in a rack. DYI is a better option if you have the time and are willing; if not....that's where a professional comes in handy.

Sooo... are they Seca carbs or Maxim carbs? When it comes to the Mikunis on the 550s, they're different.

If this "professional" isn't aware of that, has he been mixy-matching parts like main jet needles, that ARE what's different?

He's declined all the offers so far.

I had a customer brought me a Magna with a set of professionally cleaned eBay carbs that wouldn't idle. Supposedly I'd just have to adjust them.

One pilot screw was broken off in the bore and one of the pilot jets was completely blocked. Everything else was clean, like they'd been ultrasonically cleaned.

Since he waited more than 30 days to get them checked out the seller told him to pound sand. He ended up having to buy another carb body and pay me to straighten the whole mess out.

    They sure looked pretty though..........

I'd say that's quite reasonable. A set of untouched carbs will go for about $1-200, he's probably got $150 in parts in it, then probably 5 hours of labor or so....

    Is $500 a fair price?

Through my experience of properly reconditioning several carb sets, I have to say what he's asking isn't out of line. He's providing a warranty as well, which is always a plus.
