Stock Jets for 86 xj700?

    Hey, I have this 1986 xj700 here, and a previous owner decided to bob it (got it cheap). It's got plenty of problems, including pod filters and chopped/open exhaust. (and I know all about pod filters vs air box... I know it'll not run right). I can only get the bike to idle when I have my hands over the carb intakes, suggesting to me that it's running too lean w/pods.

    Right now my main jets in my carbs are 107's. When I get on Jets R Us, 110 is the smallest offered. Does anybody know what the original's were so I have a starting point on trying to get this bike to run?

    Also, if you know what the originals were... do you have an initial guess as to which jets will be the first step because of pods/chopped exhaust? Thanks!

    Okay, I found on a parts schematic that 107's are the original.

    I also found Chacal's formula :)... so I'm going to 116's as a first attempt.

    I'm not the best fan of the pods, but I have to say that you'll have to do more than just up-size the mains if it doesn't even idle properly. When you have the carbs off, you should be cleaning the pilot jets and the idle mixture / pilot fuel circuits too. It's also very important to make sure the float levels are "wet set" for the proper fuel height in the bowls.

    Then it's on to a carb sync and colortune to make sure it's tuned properly. Also, you'll have to make sure you have no vacuum leaks or ignition troubles.

    I think by the jet size you mentioned, your bike is the air-cooled 700.
    Regardless, the cleaning and tuning applies to whichever you have.
