I have an XJ650RJ without yics. I have set the floats, cleaned the carbs, checked for airleaks, checked fuel flow, balanced and have the idle jets set at 3.5 turns out, any more does nothing. It has 110 mains and 40 idle jets. I still have all the cylinders running lean,ie white plugs and a slight lean lean hesitation coming off of idle but it does run very well. I just think it is running to hot due to running lean, ie bluing the pipes slightly and the engine feels excessivly hot even when its cool outside(hotter that my GS500E I had last and although its been 6 years I dont remember my old 650 maxim running this hot. Anyway, what are people running for stock jets? Second, being use to carbs with clip type needles, I would say I need to raise the needle slightly but these hatachi's dont have clips? Put a washer under them?

Would colortune plug help in tuning it?

Stock jetting is 40/110. Does your bike have any mods (i.e., pods or exhaust)? That could be the reason for it running lean. Yes, you can put a washer underneath the needle and seat.

firebrick43, you didn't say at what speed it was too lean or what mods the bike has so it's hard to help you. Also, white plugs doesn't mean the engine is running hot, just that the mixture is too lean. You need a temperatue gauge to see if it's running too hot.
If you have pod filters you will need larger jets, there's no way around that. Putting washers under the tapered needles will ONLY change the mixture in the midrange so if that's where it's too lean then go for it. The worst that can happen is you will foul the plugs. You still have the pilot jets to deal with at slower speeds just off idle and the main jets at full throttle though.
