I have removed all bolts required to remove the cylinder head but i just can't get it free. i've hit it with a rubber mallet all over the corners and front and back and side. even used a tire iron to pry a little and managed to get left half to lift up maybe an eighth of an inch but i just can't get it off. Do you need to remove the automatic cam chain tensioner to remove the cylinder head? bike is an 82 xj650 maxim.

Did you pull the camshafts already?

By the book you remove the tensioner, rotate the crank counterclockwise to TDC, then unbolt the cam sprockets. Slip the sprocket off the cam, remove the chain (slide off sprocket, don't actually break the chain), then remove the camshafts. 12 bolts on top and 2 between the cylinders and head.

Did you remove the bolt that is HIDDEN inside the oil filter cavity ?!?!? If not, you'll pound hard enough to break something you really don't want to break

Oh wait.... Just noticed you said head not jug, my bad. Make sure you got the two bolt that are centered at the front and at the rear of the head.

You had me worried Dave! I went out to look at the manual again, I didn't recall any such bolt for the head on mine ;)

home depot or such has plastic shims for doors and windows, tap 3 or 4 of those in until you get 2 to the middle of the head the then take the shims out of the side that's up and tap it down. the head should rock on the middle shims and pop up on the tight end

there's some dowel pins in there that can rust and get stuck pretty tight. it might help if you squirt some penetrating oil in the gap, maybe it'll help

They can be a swine. Keep trying, Polock's advice sounds good, ten times better than what I ended up doing to get mine off.
