Does anyone have any experience with the electric tachs? Mine seems to be very slow operating. The colder it gets the worse it gets. It sometimes takes several seconds for the tach to catch up to the engine. Or if I am riding in the great Central IL weather during December and January like I did this year it may not move at all. Just curious whether anyone else had run into this and if there were any fixes

    Hey
I've got the same bike with the same glitch but mine also has the rare"sneeze" it and works perfectly for about 250ft then back to bizzare. I have not seen any pattern with the weather or with the temp however. Although it acts more correctly as the bike warms up. I've tried to clean all the connections...There are plug-ins at the ends... and so far no good outcomes. As I follow the wiring diagram in the manual, it appears that nothing (splices or junctions) is in the way from the tach to the coil connection so I just assume the problem is in the tach itself.
I hope someone can set us straight.

I'll be watching this thread with a magnifying glass thanx DJ

For those keen on the electronic tach problems, this is a good read. Not specifically XJ but helps understand the Yamaha ignition/electrics of the day.

Bit of a long read but well worth the perseverance.

Shows tach problems can be caused by anything from TCI, CDI to a dud battery.

Edit: tis a 5 meg file so suggest right click on the link and File Save As.

Had the same problem on my 900. Seemed to go away in the summer, or after a few miles of riding. It got worse the colder it was. Never got any worse or better so I just lived with it.
