I have the electronic type. My Hanes talks about the tach with a cable, but this one just has wires. It is working intermittently (mostly not working). This normally indicates a loose connection or a "cold solder" in an electrical system but I don't know which connectors under the tank go to the tach. There are several connectors coming off the coil. If anybody has a diagram, that'd be great. The XJ CD doesn't seem to cover this either... ARGH!

    Thanks, fellaz.

Get a hold of a Haynes manual, good diagrams. I expect you'll find a corroded contact somewhere. Best of luck to you.

In my yamaha manual XJ750RH~RK, the wiring diagram shows 3 wires off the tach.
Brown - goes all the way back to the signal fuse.
Gray - connects to the TCI unit and the #2 & #3 ignition coil.
    Black - ground

In the Haynes manual, the wiring diagram for the XJ650G, H, LH, J, & RJ models shows the TCI and ignition coil connection as an orange wire other two wires same as above.
