The tach on my 82 xj 650 J broke and i'm going to replace with another used one. The old tach was electronic no cable just wires can I go with a cable gear driven tach because i have the spot for it on the engine where the cable goes in. It looks like the one in the haynes manual I just dont know if there is a gear in there to give a reading to the tach does anybody know any help would be appreciated.

Here's the breakdown on the tach drive assembly: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19538.html The very last pic in the article shows it installed in the head. Although this is a 550, the mechanical-tach motors are all the same in this respect.

The exhaust cam will have the worm gear on it, your bike will have the "spot" for it on the engine but I don't believe it's been "finish-machined." There should be a hole for the drive gear assembly and a small tapped hole next to it for the retainer. Unless you have an earlier motor and the drive unit's there and simply been capped.

Well it looks like it must be a different engine. With the right tach and cable it looks like it should work What do you think ?

That's definitely a tach drive assembly in the pic.

Pull it and see if it still has the gear/shaft in it; might want to install new oil seals while it's apart or it WILL leak once you put it in service again.

Ok I will take it out and see if it has the gear attached still later tonight if so I should be good to go.. I'll replace the oil seals and check the tachometer of my list of half to do for the bike. The gear driven tachs are more accurate anyways right? Thanks
