I am working on a cafe racer conversion of my '82 maxim 550. I was wondering if anybody knew if a tank from a '82 seca 650 would fit? And if so, would it require any major alteration or fabrication?

I will also be adding drag bars, removing front fender, modifying rear fender, modifying seat, repainting the whole thing - probably a matte black finish, and so on...

    Any help would be great!

From my research, I'm 99% sure the Seca 650/750 tanks will go on the Maxim 650/750's, but I don't have a 550 to check against. Do you have a pic of how your 550 tank mounts? Also, it might help if you tank your tank off and measure the distance across the moutning points.

However, I'm guessing that a Seca 550 tank will probably be what you'll need.

The tank might fit the frame but not without changing the seat as well... the 650 and 750 maxim tanks are interchangable. Likely the 650 and 750 seca tanks are interchangable.

I can't comment at all on the 550.

Right, forgot to add that. The Seca seat is quite a bit different. Would take some custom mounts for the seat to work, and then it won't match up with the rear fairing, which would also need custom mounts.
