I bought this wee beastie a few years ago for $1200 plus rego etc.

The bike ran fine for the first couple of weeks and then started having problems when it was damp overnight - it'd idle fine and then refuse to rev, and then splutter and die. After about 10 to 15 minutes of just low rev running it'd come right. Eventually during winter, it decided that it wasn't gonna go at all so I left it due to not having any resources to get it going and also only having a carport that was open at the sides (terrible for working on a bike during the winter months)
since then I've had a baby son and a daughter which kept me occupied for the next two summers so the bike sat for 2 years. The petrol additives did what they tend to do, also the battery kicked the bucket...

So, I'm now determined to get it going properly again and started by trying to get it running - see my post about cylinders 3 and 4 not running (you guessed it, additives coagulating in the enrichment circuit). I've cleaned the carbys and noted a few other things that need attention. (thanks len for the drain screws, made it so much easier to bench sync)

The fuel tank for some reason is rubbing on the frame directly above the carbys, which combined with internal rust had produced several leaks in that area. It LOOKS like it’s the right tank for the bike, but the rear mounting rubber is 10 mm away from connecting with the tank because of the aforementioned spot. Does anyone have any suggestions for a solution? I was thinking of getting a secondhand tank, BUT, I’m not sure if that will fit any better, as this model bike is the 750 motor in the 900 frame. Better to keep the old tank and modify it somehow?

Things that I’ve already done include
Carbys cleaned and bench synced - replaced vacum
    Tank petcock cleaned
Front brake MC replaced – previous one wasn’t working
    Replaced one of the coils

In addition to the tank I’m trying to figure out a sequence of other things that I need to do.
    1. Both brake systems almost certainly need to be refurbished (new lines, clean cylinders, replace pads)
    2. Valves need checking
    3. Running sync needs to be done

(Copied from len's vin# post, my bike is Shortie 45T-000148)

Cant help you with much mate but as far as I can tell that is the right tank pretty sure the 900 and 750 are identical except for the motor.
Is the rubber mount at the back of the tank [where it clips on]missing?
Tanks are not that common so hang on to yours and look for another as you go.
The reason I say the tank looks right is it looks exactly the same as my 750RL.The paint is exactly the same so I suspect it might be original.
Got pics of the tank where they made contact?
Was the tank sitting on the rubbers on the front properly? because it can be put on wrong.
I will have a look at mine see if I can see anything that might help.

    +1 on above

Nice to see another one of these on this site ... kind of rare beasts in Oz ... mine is 45T-000194 ... tank is a tight fit and needs to be all the way forward to line up the rear mount ... takes a bit of shoving.

That style tank is also on an xj600 here, to widen your search, but that style of tank are form over function coz th fuel outlet is well above bottom of tank so water accumulates. Worse than my 750 tank. I reckon a good one would be hard to find and probly costly.

@iandmac and gunnabuild - The tank is indeed firmly on the correct rubber mounts on the front, I'm pretty sure that the rear mount is also the correct mount as it fits the hole in the strut in the rear of the tank, but even with a lot of shoving the tank forward, it still rubs on the frame underneath. If you look at the second photo you can see the rub marks on the frame. The last owner used some hot water insulation foam wrapped around the frame to try and minimise the rubbing but solved nothing. has anyone got a photo of the underside of their tank so I can compare? I'll take a pic of mine in the light tomorrow and post it up for your perusal...

@bushy - yeah it's a bit annoying how petcock outlet is well above the bottom level, every mechanic I've talked to about the XJ's has only had one thing to complain about - that damn rusty tank!
Fleabay has This to offer and I've had another couple of quotes below $200 but I'd prefer to try and use the original tank.

I'll post that pic tomorrow - thanks for the input so far -

That ebay tank is for a 750 RH/J not RL, same as mine and he's had it for sale for over a year. It wouldn't fit your seat or anywhere else i'd say.

Correct in that the ebay-listed tank is different and will not fit.

Correction for the xj600 tank mentioned.....the xj600 tank is sort of the same but is different ( a lot 'humpier") and won't fit.

Also, the Fj 600 tank is VERY similar, looks the same from even pretty close up, but they are still different and the contours at the back where it meets the seat are not the same, nor are the mounting points. Again, it looks almost identical til you actually have them side by side, and when you actually try to swap them. Been there, tried it with my 900's and a fj600 that I freshened, and found they are different enough.

I'll buy that for a spare if you'll cover the postage?
