    "81 XJ750RH,last registered/inspected "91.Cylinders#2,3-the sparkplugs are

clean(read..out of the box clean) after a 20 mile ride.Included a stretch on

the expressway, couldn't get the speed above 60mph.Coils tested okay (685

ohms on secondaries,2.8 on the primaries.Grounded all the plugs to the

    cylinder with wire.#'s 2&3... de nada.Swapped the 2 pronged fittings.2&3

    sparking,1&4 zip.

Pickup coils.685 ohms from one, nothing with the other.Argues for faulty pickup, but the way that the wires snake through the bike, what are the chances that it could be a shorted wire.(BTW this has been a PIA learning process, with too much time spent tracking down threads, and trying to infer from the subjects whether it pertained to my problems. This site has been a HUGE help. Thanks guys & gals.otherwise this bike would be at the curb.

The only way you would find out would be to chase each wire from the harness into the pulse coils that are on the left side of the crank. I have had them go bad in the past but they shouldn't be that bad to find on Ebay. Best of luck. The other possibility is if a member lives nearby and could let you borrow his or that someone has laying around that they can loan out for you to test. Unfortunatley I don't have a 750 or I would help. Wonder if they are the same from the 550 to the 750?? in theory they should be, they are just picking up the pulse from the crank. Ok just thinking outloud there.

I have a spare set up pickups but I would require a replacement price deposit plus shipping to get them out to you.

Yes,please Robert, sent you a PM. I took the p/u coil off and couldn't find a way to get at a wire.Don't want to strip the insulation,if I don't have to.Although,I guess the things are protected from the elements pretty well, inside the housing. If I poke a needle into the wire,I could test the integrity and I guess that the hole could be painted with liquid electrical tape.
I'm not a very good motorcycle diagnostician.Have been on vac. all week, should have fixed the d****d thing by now...

You will find the connection for the P/U coil connected to the TCI (6 pin connector). Your P/Us can be ohmed out between the Orange and Brown wire and the Gray and Brown wire. You should read 650 ohms. Anything above or below 10% is suspect. Let us know what you find out.

Went out and triple-checked the values.
    Presuming that with the 4-wire fitting,two go to each p/u coil,one(orange &
black wires) read.680 with the meter on the 2K setting.Anyway, the other pair gets no change, ergo Broke?
...OFFICIAL DISCLAIMER...Afraid that I know VERY little about electrical/electronic matters.and borrowed the meter from a friend,so while you guys are "sighted",I'm pretty close to blind. The phrase"D**b f**k" come to mind.
I was wondering if anyone had had the wire short out as it wandered up to the TCI?Groveling for a quick fix,I'd say..
Back to work on Monday, and only one abbreviated ride for the week..I"ll just have to lie to everybody when they ask how the riding was.

The 4 pin connector goes to the ignition coils. Red/white is common, Orange and Grey are the other side of each coil respectively. I did mention that you want to check the 6 pin connector. It is the only connecter involved with the pickup coils. Hope this helps.
