I’ve read a few places saying I should be able to open my TCI, pull out the PC board, clean it, check and repair contacts. I’ve got an 85 XJ700X. I pulled the unit but it appears to be a sealed unit except for a couple weep holes (?) on the bottom. Does anyone have a link to a discussion/video/explanation on how to test or get into it?

Not 100% on this, but I believe that is a sealed unit and very similar to the combo Flasher/Starter Relay assembly on the later versions of XJ's. If so, Yamaha used a very resilient filler that makes it pretty much impossible to repair. The older versions have 4 screws on the label side that attached a cover and when removed exposed the back side of the PCB, which could be inspected for corroded joints.

Agree my 82 seca 750 TCI you can pull the back cover off , think on the later they are sealed.

Correct, it was massive improvement in design by Hitachi (yes, they make electronics as well as carbs......) that made a basically unserviceable part even more unserviceable, you know, just for the fun of it.

Unfortunately the only really good test is in another bike, or installing a known good one in a suspect bike.

There are lots of members that are willing to test in their bike, but that does involve the price of shipping back and forth as well as some patience.

To test as a standalone unit a bench test set with a special generator and oscilloscope can get really close to a reliable test.
