I know the manual says to check valve clearances when the motor is cold and at room temperature. With the current weather, there is no doubt that the motor is cold, but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay below room temperature out in my unheated garage.

Is there a danger or disadvantage in checking the valve clearances when the bike is at winter temperatures? What's the coldest ambiant temperature that you have done a valve adjustment Do I need to wait for spring?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

The difference to the bike between 65F and 12F is negligible. You don't want the motor at OPERATING temp or anything near it. You should be fine but it may be a bit stiff to turn over and GO SLOW when you do have to turn it backwards.

    This was discussed a few months ago- - 72 * F or 20 * C is "room temp".
As opposed to a "hot" motor. I guess you could run it for a couple minutes??

Fine red wines are also supposed to be served at "room temperature", and in modern central HVAC houses that means at about 70-degrees F, and the wine tastes like crap, because it's warm.

Back in the day when the term and idea of serving wine at "room temperature" came about, there wasn't any central heat and "room temperature" was more along the lines of 50-60 degrees.

Red wine tastes much better at those temps.

BTW, if you want to know at what temp. to drink any type of fermented spirits at for the proper intended taste, determine what the temperature of fermentation is; that's the best consumption temp., too.

Yamaha, just like winemakers, doesn't specify what "room temperature" is, which considering their expertise at many things engineering, is amazingly ludicrous.

However, the difference in expansion (and thus clearances) between 30-F and 70-F is probably minimal (I believe someone once calculated it on a thread to be around .0001") so it probably won't make any difference.

If you're concerned about it, let the engine warm up for 3-5 minutes and then cool-down for 3-4 hours, and that should be close enough for government work, unless you're turning wrenches north of the Arctic Circle!
