    I just finished the carb rebuild (complete disassembly). I followed yalls advice and dry set then wet set the floats ( I was lucky only one carb needed tweaked got it in 2 trys) put everything back on the bike and it fired right up. It sounded so much better than before the rebuild I took it out without even tweaking (2 1/5 turns out on the pilot screws) or syching the carbs. It runs awesome, a whole different bike. I can't wait until tomorrow when I have time to sych the carbs. Couple more questions for you:
    1) I have an infrared temp gauge and would like to know if anyone knows what temps I should be getting on the exhaust for the XJ650J. I have the K&N Single Air filter with the standard airbox and a 4 into one exhaust system. I'm thinking I can use this instead of the colortune plug, does anyone know?

    2) I read somewhere that I should be getting 165 mm/hg on the #3 intake is that correct?

    My personal recommendation is to use the colortune. This way it will be dead on. I can almost guarantee you are running to lean right now with only a little over 2 turns out on the mix screws. You will probably end up at about 4-5 turns out. Colortune will put you where you need to be and don't forget to sync, colortune then sync and colortune again. This will get you set to perfect. Then you are going to notice an even bigger difference.

    The color tune will get you really really close BUT, if you do not own one and do not plan on it... you can simply read the plugs after a short ride.
    Black sooty plugs? screw the mix screws inward 1/8th turn at a time.
    You are looking for a darkish brown color.
    White-ish colored plugs? open up the mix screw in a hurry 1 full turn.

    This is a long process but it is a labor of love.

    Sorry BillB but I would have to say you have that backward.... The pulling of the plugs method MIGHT get you close but the colortune will get you dead on.

    Been searching for a source for the Colortune plug. Found online for $60 plus another 10 for shipping. My problem is I have no paypal or creditcard or desire to get either one. The auto parts houses and local Yamaha dealers websites don't list/recognize the item. I guess I will do the plug chop method. My Harley minded friend tells me to run it for ten minutes at speed then pull in the clutch and kill it, coast to a stop read the plugs and make the adj right there if i wish to be accurate.

    Get it vacuum sync'ed first before you start trying to drive yourself crazy.

    The valves ARE in spec, right?
