So this is my first endeavor into the xj bikes and so far I am very pleased. First. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this site. Especially electrical. I got this bike in boxes. So far I've made my own headlight mounting, my own bars, (which are about to change to a pair of ProTaper dirt bike bars). lowered the seat pan 3in. I also plan on making this bike a 2 up bobber. Otherwise the wifey would kill me. LOL. I'll update as I make progress. Any input would be awesome.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the site. I just got my bobber done yesterday in fact!

To add pics I host them on photobucket.com and use their link in my posts to add pics.

Good luck with the build and have some fun with 'er!

One thing I haven't figgured out is the speedo. I've got no insturments at all. I do have the cable but nothing else. I wanna do something clean and simple like a small Autometer speedo like a drag car. Anyone know if it will work with the bike's cable? Or any ideas?

OK so I know there are some who make custom struts here. How did you do yours? or are they a temporary thing? Details would be much appreciated. Looks great so far and i ssimilar to what I am going for with mine.

I like it man. Check out the Acewell speedometer for a small, clean look. Most models have a speedo, tach, clock, and all the idiot lights.

That acewell looks pretty sweet. Are they expensive? those are actually turnbuckles i used for mock-up. They are really helpful for deciding height. I actually got a set of shocks off ebay yesterday. Hopefully they'll ship tomorrow. I'm on a VERY tight budget with this bike. Anyone looking for a stock seat? lol I'll trade it for some other parts! Still haven't figgured out what to do about the exhaust but we'll see. I was thinking MAC 4 in to 1 but once again money money money!

I went to mikesxs.com and ordered one for an XS. It was cheap and looks good. You can order a cable for it too, I almost guarantee it's the same, but call to make sure.

So another installation lol. Tonight was a late one. I finished all of the electrical with the exception of the turn signals. I need a diagram to do a simple turn signal set up. I also need a back for the left side handle bar controls. Anyone got one. Painted the tank and made the rear bracket for it. A buddy is gonna do the seat for me Wednesday. Hopefully tomorrow wont be so late. I got in trouble tonight. LOL! Thank God my girlfriend is such an understanding person!

you can get them at any Home Depot or most hardware stores. I definitely wouldn't suggest on riding on them though. I'm just using them for mock up

So I finally got the bar mounts today. Mounted them along with my 1 1/8" ProTaper bars. Had a friend attempt to clear the tank. Bad Idea! Ohh well I decided on actually painting it. I need a pair of fenders. any ideas? I'd also like to get another tank as mine has some rust in it. again any ideas?

Looks good to me, although for a rigid it looks a little on the thin side, may be hard on the rear end

If the 650 and 750 left hand controls are the same, I may have one. Just need to check in the basement. You can have it just mail me back the postage.

i'm using a 70's triumph rear fender cut down on the back of my bobber, it fits nice, the one i had on when it was a soft tail was a cut down trailer guard, cheep and effective

it's lookin good man! I agree though on the seat. You will want a spring loaded or more padding for a rigid.

You can easily clean any tank with a little Muratic acid mixed with a decent amount of water. Blow it out with shop air and put gas in it immediatly so it wont flash rust. Or even better than shop air, rinse it out with gas and throw the 'rinse gas' away. Dont have your pet cock on there when you do it either, the acid will kill it. Use a rubber plug or something.

I picked up a 70's yamaha scooter speedo on ebay for 10 bucks. it only goes to 80 mph, which I dont mind but it is small about 2" to 2.25" diameter and doesnt have anything else but a back light on it.

hahaha I actually figured it out today. Turns out if you compress the spring the top actually un threads like a conventional car shock. I cut the springs a bit but it puts the shock too low in the stroke. I'm thinking about running the threads down the rod a bit further and chopping the top to bring the shock up in the stroke a bit. we'll see

I have ordered one of these... and would appreciate some heads up on it.. here is the link. http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detai ... ame=detail I would like to know has anyone used or wired up the fuel guage sensor.. and if so what did you use to put in your tank. I have a 85 maxim and I want to have the use of this function. I also like to know of any problems with the wiring side as there will no doubt be alot of wires.. thanks again.

    Bikrman,
Those frame rails would look good with some red LED lights mounted inside them on the ends.
I put chrome caps in mine (found at any hardware store, made for end caps on metal chairs) and then I drilled holes in them and mounted a red LED in each one. I ran the wire inside the frame tubes to small holes under the seat and use rubber grommets to keep the wires from shorting out on the frame.

anyone... ooh boy ... looks like I will have to work this one out too..

unless anyone know of any way to put a sensor in your tank without too much fuss... I would prefer a bottom mount one..

    thanks
