Whacked a new stainless can on the 550 today. A mate made it from scratch as the old trumpet was a bit hollow and had bugger all back pressure. Not to mention a bit loud due to missing most of the baffles.

New can makes it a bit quiet (maybe too quiet) and adds the missing back pressure that made it burble and sputter at 5000 revs in top.

Still got a little tuning to do but thought I'd share the new look.

Whacked a poll in there for a bit of a chuckle. Fire away with your opinions.

Love it!!! Got any pics from further back, like a good profile shot of the bike with the new muffler?

550's and below had chain drive from the factory.

I like the appearance but I'm going to side with Sno on this one. The tip doesn't flow with the bike. But I'm glad to hear it works well for you, any port in a storm and if it is beautiful, what the heck! More power to ya bro!

    Fair comments.

While I totally understand the comments on the tip, it is basically designed to keep the rain out of the exhaust and follows the style of a lot of the aftermarket cans available for sports bikes these days.

Cheers for all the feedback folks. My mate now has this thought buzzing in his head about stainless headers.

    Stay tuned.

Just a bit of an update on the performance changes after fitting the new exhaust.

The burbling that I was getting with the old exhaust has all but disappeared. I believe the reason behind this was lack of backpressure causing it to run at bit lean at higher revs. Still need to check the carb sync and whack the colourtune back in to check the mixture since the mod.

The best part is fuel economy. Before the new pipe I was getting 170 km out of a tank before switching to reserve. Now I'm getting just over 200km per tank.

Given that the tank only holds just under 12 litres due to all the dents under the bog, then this is a fairly good increase in mileage.

All in all I'm a happy camper.

    Cheers
    HG

At the risk of boring people and looking like I'm bumping my posts, I thought I'd add the profile pic that Joel asked for and a couple of pics of the baffle system.

Keeping it all in the same thread makes it easier to look up later.

    First the profile shot.

Baffle, Showing roughly how it's constructed. Centre baffle is perforated flat sheet rolled into a tube. End plates are basicaly made from cutting a strip of the outer tube and taking a "splint" out of it to reduce the diameter till if fits inside.

Plates are then welded to the end. Number of holes drilled in the end plate is used to control back pressure and loudness. EG more holes, less backpressure, more noise.

Nice!! Like the construction pics, have been considering building my own mufflers for another bike of mine. Don't feel like shelling out $300 for new slip-ons. 8O

Did you use any fiberglass packing around the preforated tube?

No, Joel, I didn't use any packing. I was going to, but was very happy with the noise it makes.

If I was living in a quiet area I might consider it but it is way quieter then the old trumpet muffler so I'm happy.
