This rubber shouldn't be here. Tires and tubes.

    Tire valve.

So I go to replace the front tire on a XJ550, pull off the old one and notice there's a big chunk of rubber on the valve. Obviously this wheel had tubed tires in it, then someone chopped off most of the tube, except for a little piece and put on tubeless tire

Then I take off the back tire and there's a tube inside!

I've never replaced tube tires before except on a bicycle. Is it unwise to have an old tube valve like that on a rim that's supposed to take tubeless? Can I do the same to the back wheel? Both wheels say they are suitable for tubeless.

    Thanks!

    Apato.

Replace the valve stems with the proper type for sure. That front set up is just an accident waiting to happen.

Are you sure the "big chunk of rubber" is not a tubeless valve?? They have a big chunk of rubber in the inside.

Either way, replacing them with new ones is the best option - you don't want to fit your tyres and then find out you have to take them off again to fit new valves....

Sounds like a PO was trying to wring the last few miles out of tires that should have been replaced.

Replace the valve stems with the correct type and fit tubeless tires.

Be sure the rims are religiously clean first.

Don't forget- - rear brake delamination inspection- - bearing check- - rim bead seat "perfect" - - metal valve caps with air seal- - new cotter pins- - double-check the balance using 2 chairs and the axle.

Thanks all. Got the first tire done. Looks good and holds air. Now onto the rear.
