I will be performing a fresh vacuum sync / idle set / idle mix tomorrow and have a question as this will be the second time I've performed this maintenance on my XJ650K Maxim and am still a bit of a novice. It was a couple of years ago that I first did all this (after running the gamut of checking and adjusting valve clearances, breaking the cleaning the carb rack, bench/wet setting the floats, etc.) and it was very much trail by error and I've never been entirely confident in how the bike runs (would chug along when starting from a stand-still in 1st gear, sometimes dying, and I have to turn left onto a busy road to go anywhere from my house) so I'm looking to devote some serious tuning time this fall so that I can finally enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Anyhow, my primary question is where should I have the throttle cable adjustment nut set at when performing this? At first my thinking is to have it set right where the throttle cable begins to pull up and open the butterflies, but now I'm wondering if it makes sense to have it set more towards the middle of its working range so that it can be used for adjusting the idle on the fly a good bit in either direction, either up or down. I hope all of that makes sense.

My secondary question is a bit of an odd-ball and a little off this topic: my bike has an odd habit of revving up considerably when the handlebars are turned: I am yet to troubleshoot this and see if its more due to the bike leaning right or left or if its simply the act of the handlebars turning that is causing this. I replaced the throttle cable with a stock replacement purchased from Len and lubed it up well before installing and the problem persists. Could this be due to the routing of the cable causing it to pull when the handlebars are turned? It does not appear to be taught in any unhealthy way. There is also the remnants of what I believe to be an aftermarket throttle lock / cruise control between the throttle grip and the ignition module so I'm wondering if that could be the culprit. Any thoughts or experience with this issue would also be appreciated.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

You should do your sync with the throttle cable very slack. The idle speed is set by a screw with a knurled knob that sticks down between the 2 & 3 carburetors.

After everything is running properly you adjust the cable so it has just a bit of slack (about 1/8" free travel).
