I've searched for half an hour now and can't find it. What's the correct orientation of the groove in the throttle shaft seals? The one's I'm removing the groove faces out, but I want to make sure that's correct.
    Thanks!

BTW, parts shipped from chacal Monday, and got here today. Everything looks great! Rebuilt one caliper and waiting for the second to dry so I can get it done. While I'm waiting I figured I break the carbs apart for the seal replacements there.

That's correct. The vacuum flares the split out, seals better.

Chacal parts have grooves on both sides anyway, I think. Did two sets of carbs with them.

Thanks guys. Chazmati is correct: parts from Chacal have grooves on both sides. Got everything torn apart, cleaned, replaced seals and reassembled. I think I'm going to get some cap screws for the mounting rails before I align and tighten them down though. A couple of the OE screws are just about shot. Thank goodness the impact screwdriver works great!

Old thread but it actually comes up on a search for "throttle shaft seals orientation" so I thought it could use some more clarification since it is a common repair and did not fully answer which way was the correct orientation.

Since they are open on both sides my first thought was that it did not matter, however, there is a small raised lip on one edge of the inner diameter of the seal, so I was wondering if this lip should go in or out?

Per Chacal - "The small lip should be oriented facing the inside (the throat) of the carb."

I would have guessed wrong as I visualized the vacuum with the lip on the inside would pull the seal off the shaft, whereas on the outside vacuum would pull the lip tighter to the shaft - so another good example of asking the experts here.

OK, so I am not sure what I saw a couple of days ago when I referenced a small raised lip on one edge of the inner diameter. I looked again today and now I am thinking it was just the way the light was reflecting on the seal that made it appear that way. Puzzled though... Chacal said the small lip should be oriented facing the inside. Here is a side by side comparison, am I missing something?

One other thought - does everyone agree that silicon grease should be used on the installation as referenced here:

There are (believe it or not) multiple suppliers for these seals, and the seals differ in style from each other. When we receive shipments in, we try to not "co-mingle" the shaft seals from one supplier with another's in the sets (although, it wouldn't make a difference if we did).

The current OEM seals are completely "open" or "hollow" on one face (and fully filled on the other face), and on those seals, the "open" side faces "out" (away from the carb throat).

On the aftermarket seals, I can no longer visualize any meaningful difference from side A to side B (although I may be looking at only one supplier's offerings, or, my eyes ain't what they used to be, or both.......). Cutting one of these seals reveals that their cross section is symmetric, so it does not matter which side faces "out" or "in". Earlier versions, I recall, had asymetrical faces, with one side having a pronounced "lip", and on those seals, the lip side is installed towards the throat.

I'd have to do a bit more digging to try and locate some of the older aftermarket stock and see if there is a difference, but, my thinking is that there is no orientational difference on the aftermarket seals, nor on the "older" OEM seals, which also used to be the same design/appearance as the aftermarket seals pictured above.

Thanks so much for the reply. Your attention to detail and finding these parts to keep these old XJ's going is just incredible!

Yes you want to use silicone grease on all the rubber seals.

Is that double ring on the seals the reason regular orings won't work
