I figured since I have to replace everything else on my bike before I can ride it :x , I would do the oil too. When I go to pick up an oil filter, what do I need to ask for? Ive been reading the "What oil do you use" thread so I am in good shape there.

Secondly, is changing the front brake pads on my bike any different than doing discs on a car?

If you want to err on the side of caution, you pick up the 2 "O" rings and the spring with the filter at the dealer.

Brakes are similar. Keep the rotors and pads clean. Don't over-force the pistons into the calipers with a clamp. Tap on the calipers while bleeding to shake loose air bubbles.

If you can get the FRAM cartridge filters, you're looking for CH6003 - even comes with 2 new O-rings -- but not the spring.

I don't understand TIMEtoRIDE's comment about not using a clamp on the caliper tough -- I've been doing that for 3 brake jobs over the last 18 years, and never had a problem at all. The only time it's a problem is on newer import cars that use pistons that rotate out -- ours aren't like that.
Just remember to remove the cover from the master cylinder, and watch the level as you push the piston back in - remove & discard fluid as needed. I have broken down and bought a real "piston compressor" however instead of the classic C-clamp.

How much did that set you back?

Have anyone used the Wix filter? It is supposed to come with the o-rings as well.

WIX makes excellent filters - I use them on my autos whenever I can find them.

Can't stand Fram spin-on filters due to shoddy construction, but the cartridge filters like we use are excellent.

I pay about $7 for the Fram filter here in Canada

Thanks for the filter comparison, but how much was the piston compresor?

Like anything there's different quality levels - I went low end for mine, and spent all of $8 on it. It's been working like a charm for over 3 years now.

    Looks like this one
