i've been a member here for about a month or so, lurking whilst i got my newly aquired xj1100j. the po said that the engine was siezed solid, but when i got it home i discovered this was not the case. i was able to easily get ~358 degrees of crank rotation before it stopped.

so i took the head off. when i did so a screw, similar to the ones that hold the caps on the carbs, dropped out of the engine. there was some minor damage to the piston and head, but the local yamaha shop head mechanic told me : "if there is no damage to the valve seat or cylinder walls, take off the sharp edges and put it back together."

so after some time and gaskets, the engine is back together and the engine started up immediately. starts way better than my xs750. now i am waiting for a few more parts to arrive and cleaning it up a bit more as it was a barn bike (bird toilet). i hope to take it for a ride before the riding season is over here.

    Way to go there.

I've had things go into the intake on a couple of engines I built in the way distant past.
Seems that the comon factor was the same person I had helping me.

I'd like to think it was an accident!?

If the cyl wall is ok and the valve train is ok, I'd run it.
like the man said smooth the rough edges out and Go For It.

    BTW welcome to the site

    Welcome to this forum.

You and me and I think someone else also all found screws in the cylinders keeping the motors from turning. 3 motors with screws loose inside in a month.
Mine were never any part of a motorcycle - random hardware. I did verify that mine were not accidently dropped in through the intake by kids. They would not fit past the valve at full lift! They had to be dropped in via the spark plug holes. My PO only said the carbs were rebuilt than then the needles got bent when they opened the butterflies....

Now that the GF finally has a new job, I hope to have more time to do the valve job and put it back together in time for winter storage!

I think 'm gonna end up pulling all the exhaust studs out and replace them all this winter with either bolts or slightly longer studs. most of the studs came out when i took the head off and were essentially bolts anyway. I do have to figure out why the brake indicator stays on all the time as well. could be something to do with some of them wires that are cut and taped up.....

Welcome and good luck K, sounds like you have your hands full with all the issues you've mentioned. Hope we are able to assist in what ever capacity we can.
