SO, I have an 82 Yamaha xs400r Seca. The manual says tire pressure should be 26/28lbs for less than 198lbs load, and 28/36lbs for 198-474lbs and 2 up riding. The tires say 41 lbs for 2 up riding. I'm about 185lbs, so I split the difference and put in about 32/34.

Is there a rule of thumb for this? Follow the manual, or follow the tires?

If the tire manufacturer has a recommendation (and I don't mean the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall) go with their recommendation. They know way more about the tire than Yamaha did 25+ years ago.

The 41lbs is the max load inflation. I wouldn't run at 41lbs.

You're fine at 28/34, might want to go to 28/36, especially for 2-up.
