I'm having a problem with the first gear popping out while accelerating to normal shifting, but too soon to go ahead and shift.
What should I be looking for in the tranny that would cause this?

Well, it's fixed. When I removed the shift linkage, I noticed that the knurled post had some back & forth travel. After removing the access cover, I could see that the excess travel allowed the tranny to pop out of gear. Went to Lowe's and bought a pack of thin 12mm washers for less than 2 bucks. Placed 1 washer behind the post and buttoned it all back together, works fine. Was really glad that I didn't have to separate the cases.
