Finally finished cleaning carbs. Now for the fun stuff. After reinstalling the carbs, I check the float bowl heights=o.k. so onto next step. Put the batt. back into the bike, but it would not start. So a shot of carb cleaner into each cyl. and she fires up. I set up a fan on the bike to keep temps ok.
couldn't synch the carbs as I don't have the tool, but I figure I want to try my new colortune. First problem- I can't get the idle speed below 1500 rpm even with the idle speed screw all the way out. (Choke is off ).

Anyway, I want to give this colortune a try so I put it into cyl 1 and fire up. Nice blue flame, but adjusting the pilot screw doesn't seem to make much difference. Starting position was 2 3/4 turns out. I backed out a full turn, but not much change.?? All four cylinders seem to perform the same. I'm sure someone out here in xj land will clue me in.

At that RPM, the engine is "Off-idle" so tweaking the idle mixture screws will just be good exercise until you can trim 5-hundred rev's off.

Cable slack? Try adjusting the Cable Slack adjuster on the throttle cable.
A little extra air getting-in, someplace??? Stuck linkage? Maybe a shot of WD-40?

You can ColorTune once you're back in the Idle Ball Park.

The YICS tool is really easy to make yourself. Or, I could make one up for you. There are already plenty of topics on this already here (use the search function/"YICS tool")
    Questions, PM me.
Rick's right about the RPM. And you'll only get in the ballpark without the YICS tool, even using the Colortune, as you're not isolating the carbs from one another.
