With no other option seemingly available at this point, I reluctantly pulled the surge chamber. Lo and behold, there were pools of fuel sitting in the inlet mouths of all three carbs (WTF?) Prior to pulling the rack, I wiggled in my little piece of clear tubing to eyeball the float levels once again; this time #4 level rose well above the parting surface. Hmmmm. Not so good. I'm wondering if I have a saturated (heavy) float? OK, but here'sthe wierd part. After checking float levels, I drain the contents of each float bowl into a clean container to catch and dump the fuel on some weeds growing in my driveway. Just as I'm about to dump it......WTF?.... I notice copper-colored metal flakes in the fuel. Hmmm...... must not have been as clean of a container as I thought....so I dump the fuel and go drain the next bowl. Same thing. And the next, and the next. No, it's not anti-sieze. Though I used it on the new bowl drain screws, it was silver, not copper. I have no idea where this might have come from. Any ideas?

Sounds like you got some of the same type of reddish crud Rick got in his fuel filters awhile ago. I think he has a picture of the stuff. If that's not the case, I am wondering if it's from your fuel pump.

    I'm thinking the same thing.
Oh, the things we learn by trial and error........
Mac, did you know the main jets are different sizes on #s 1/4 and 2/3? Neither did I until I perused the shop manual!
Fortunately I kept my parts segregated!
Nothing apparently wrong with the needle. It may have been stuck. I still suspect a heavy float, though!
"Correct" float height is 17.5+/- 0.5mm, fuel level is listed as 2+/-1 mm....I'm assuming that is fuel level BELOW the bowl parting surface, no?
We'll get to the bottom of this eventually......
