    Hi All,

I am complete newbie to both XJ bikes and motorcycling. In MSF I learned how to ride on a Suzuki GZ250. Got myself Maxim X 700. If I flip the turn indicator switch while the bike is parked, everything works fine. I am unable to turn it on while in motion. Left turn indicator works sometimes, right almost never does. When I pushed the button in on Suzuki it would cancel the indicator. For some reason it does not happen on XJ. I am also experiencing headlight turning off sometimes (randomly) for a split second at low RPM. Should I start looking for loose ground and shorts in the wiring, or should I start with replacing the turn indicator switch?

Strange that it works while parked but not while riding! Could be power issues taking place, how's the fuse block? Still original glass fuses? If so they could be making poor connections.

I would start with checking and cleaning all the connections.

Also look at the signal bulb sockets for possible rust/corrosion problems.

While at it tear the signal switch apart and check the connections and wiring.

Check the length of the Alternator Brushes to specs: Minimum 10mm

Look for a "Wear Bar" line on the brush. At or near the line?

    Brushes time.

If it as the switch in the headlight that keeps theheadlight off until the enigne is running, it may be getting a weak signal from the alternator. I'd check the alternator output. Maybe the brushes are worn or dirty?

I figured it out. Somebody messed with the wiring. I mean messed a freaking lot! Loose contacts all over the place. The petrified grease in the turn switch was as hard as a million year old mammoth crap. I am surprised it worked at all, even when the bike was not moving.
