Turn signal woes, electronic flasher not fixing it?

    Hey guys.

    When I turn my turn signals on, they illuminate but don't blink, only sometimes at high RPMs.

    I tried buying an electronic flashing unit. It plugged right in, and when I turn on the switch, nothing whatsoever. What am I doing wrong here? Is there something that needs to be modified when switching to electronic flashers?

    It also might be notable that my voltage drops to like 8 volts when I turn on the blinkers and they turn on.

    For the flashers to work properly you've got to have a good battery and alternator that is charging properly.

    Do you have the two pin replacement relay? If not, that would explain the lack of flash. Avoid the three pin variety.

    It doesn't matter, there isn't any flasher that will work on only 8 volts so he has to fix the charging system.

    Side note.. I used a 3 connector generic flasher... just needed to make an adapter cable... only use 2 pins of the flasher..... (took a bit of trial and error to figure that one out)

    Arizona, you do have a point but I'll argue the 8 volt point (and this is splitting hairs). The electronic systems engineered in these modern times work on 5 volt signals as a general rule (TTL is sooo old). Even with the lowered voltage, he should see something happen.
    To recap, he's got lit indicators which means there is enough voltage and current for the buggers to work. This also means he's got enough "umph" in the system for an electronic flasher to do its thing.
    But you are right, he does need to address the charging system.
    ZaGhost, I tried to monkey a three pin (three different versions as a matter of fact) into the system and did not find success with any of them. I went so far as to remove the lines from the connector and pin up the relay externally. No joy. The design of the three pin units requires a + source, a - return and the circuit output to the lights.
    Of course there may be that odd-part out there (and I'd like to get one) that will allow it but I've struck out 4 times now (I purchased a 5 pin just to yank its guts open and see if I could weedle a means of keeping the self canceling circuit intact).
    I've got a CarQuest two pin thermal flasher installed now, works great. Just gotta cancel the flashers myself. Not a bad habit to get into in the first place.
