Hi guys, Just enquiring for a friend who does not have the internet and Wondering if anyone out there can help.
My friend did a 200mile road trip the other day on his 93 xj900f and on the back the bike was running weirdly.
After he stopped to for petrol, when restarting the bike it only fired on two cylinders! luckly he was close to home and rode it back.
On the way home it blew the main fuse so he used his lights fuse to get him the rest of the way home.
When he got home he checked the bike over and noticed an electrical smell, and consequently had blown his igniter box! he has just replaced the igniter box but it is still only running on two cylinders.
If anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated as he's really stumped and has been off the road for a week!
    Many thanks Chris

Hi Al, thanks for the quick reply.
I've just phoned him to ask your question, He said he hasn't touched the bike since he tried the new igniter box, he will try testing the coils but did not think it would be carb related{but will check them too}, his main concern was what would have made the Main fuse blow and then burn out the igniter box {cdi}.
    Many thanks Chris

Hi - I would check for anything else that is on the main fuse circuit. He really needs a manual although it is similar to the xj 600 and there is a 600 diagram here: http://xjdiagrams.thundervalleypower.com/
I would check the wiring for continuity from the TCI to the coils as it may be a coil fault. There are two coils running a "Spare spark" system so the cylinders fail in pairs! It could even be the wiring between the tci box and coil.

    Where abouts are you?

Something's shorting, or the original fuse was duff. If new fuse brings the same problem then, yes, something else is responsible (poss internal short).
    Check coils etc as above.

The 900F is the same as the '83 900 Seca in the US. The coils are pretty much universal throught the 650/750/900 series bikes.

Also check the plug wires for shorting to ground.
