<rant> I'm riding home 20 minutes ago from watching the UFC fights at my buddies house when some idiot redneck in a beatup POS pickup truck decides he wants to race me. I ignore him. He tailgates me, pulls up along side me revving his engine at stoplights, burns out every time he takes off. I slow down and ignore him more. Finally, the two lane road becomes a one lane and he darts ahead of me at the last second, cuts me off, and locks up his brakes....WTF??? I couldn't believe it. I normally ride very safe, I'm always in all my gear, I don't speed or weave, but I couldn't take it. I downshifted two gears, punched the throttle and took off around him. I don't know how fast I got going but after I crested the second hill I no longer saw him so I slowed down and turned off so I could get back to where I lived. One of the very few times in my life where if I had had a gun on me my life would have taken a very bad turn for the worse. </rant>

Sorry, I had to vent somewhere and if I tell my gf this story she'll just worry. On the brighter side the bike is running great and has lots of power, plus the fights were awesome.

Maybe his girlfriend (AKA sister) was in the truck, and he was trying to impress her. Just makes you wonder what people are thinking sometimes. On a positive note,at least you got to watch the fights, and weren't involved in one yourself...

Six or seven??? It's just getting happy! NINE grand, ninety-five hundred, heck run it right into the red! Running 3rd and 4th out to redline is perfect for what I like to call "rocketing into the distance." Sometimes people need to be reminded just exactly how much quicker a bike accelerates than a pickup truck.

SLK, if you're always shifting at 6 or 7K you're missing the good part...

Some people are just idiots. Despite ignoring him he wanted to mess with you. I hate that kind.

That's how I discovered I needed to adjust my clutch a bit. I was passing a couple cars and, when the engine got up in the Rpm's, I heard the engine spin up but I wasn't going any faster. :x I let off the throttle and allowed the clutch to grab again, finishing the pass. I made the adjustment the next time I stopped for fuel. 6k-7k is where the real power band is. Amazing! 8O

I had one of those guys on another bike the other day. Fact: a four speed 650 Shadow is no match for a weighted down 650 XJ. That is what he found out in short order.

Really??? Shifting that high wont hurt my engine!!??
(first time driving a manual btw!!!)
I thought when you start hearing your clutch whirr past the deeper, lower exhaust rumble, thats when you're supposed to shift. Know what I mean?? I didnt know you could revv that high without hurting her. Much less shift at such a high rpm!

Just let the garbage truck (literally this time it seems) roll off yer back, the idiot was obviously looking for trouble and you had the presence of mind not to provide it. Good on ya!
I hope the unbridled power of your escape satisfied his curiosity.
