Just got a new (to me) '83 XJ900 Seca (US) to keep my '83 XJ750 Seca company. It's in pretty decent shape with less than 24,000 miles and I think I got a pretty good deal on it. Definitely needs carb work though, as it will start, but not idle or run without choke. Been down that road with the 750 so I'm not too worried.

I do have a question on the wiring under the seat though. On mine, there is a big bundle of wires which partially crosses in front of the socket that the tab on the front of the seat goes in to. This seems wrong to me as it looks like a good way to pinch wires between the frame and the seat and end up with a short. See photo for what I mean. The area circled in green is the area in question. The wires don't seem like they should be under that plastic flap since it doesn't appear like there is really room for them to exit cleanly.

Do they all look like this or has somebody routed something wrong at some point? Can anybody post a picture of theirs so I can see how it's supposed to look?

    Thanks.

Oh wow. That looks way different. It looks like somebody mounted the whole thing rotated 90 degrees on mine. Those tabs should be on the side rails. Thanks!

I honestly never imagined I would own one. They are so scarce around here. Only one I ever saw in person was literally in a museum. I had been trying to contact the Craigslist seller for over a month and never got a response even though the ad was still up and even said it had been updated. When the ad finally expired last week, I had given up hope and assumed it likely sold right away and the seller never bothered to take it down. Then all the sudden I got a message saying it was still available. I hooked up the trailer and drove across town as quick as I could. Based on the asking price I assumed it would be pretty rough but was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait to get it back on the road.

Well, I got the wiring sorted out. Whoever put it in wrong must have really worked at it. They had it wedged in so tight the tray was completely distorted. Once I finally pried it out, I had to clamp it to the frame rails to try and coax it back in to shape. I'm going to leave it that way a couple days and hopefully it will relax back to its original shape. The wires run much cleaner now - thanks @Franz for the pic. That helped a lot.

While I had the tank off, I noticed something else...for the circled screw holes, is there a bracket or something missing that connects the air box to the frame? The holes are threaded and one of them had a bolt in it, but nothing was connected to anything. Seems odd to have 4 threaded holes with nothing attached to them.

Thanks again @Franz. That made it easier to track down the part #.

Found a couple on eBay...some in a parts lot which might even have a few more things I need. But unfortunately, not in the US and shipping is insane. Just have to keep watching...or I might be able to manufacture one on my CNC.

Have you asked Chacal if he has a bracket?

Haven't asked him about the bracket. Am talking to him about my carb though...

I modeled up one to 3D print. First draft is printing now. That'll probably work for the time being.

Worked out pretty well. It's a lot thicker than the stock metal one to give more strength, but it seems pretty solid. Only thing is I'm not sure if I got the height offset right. If anyone has one handy, can you measure? With the bracket on a flat surface, I need the distance from the surface to the underside of the top plate to the nearest mm.

Here's how it looks installed. It needs longer bolts than stock due to the thickness, but since all of mine were missing anyway, no big deal. I had an assortment of flange head bolts on hand.

Once I can confirm the height, I'll post it in the 3D printing section in case anyone else gets caught in a pinch.
