So, I want to adjust the valves on my 82 xs400r seca. As far as I know, it's never been done. Two questions. First, when I'm taking off the tank, what's the best way to drain fuel? Second, are valve shims generic, or do I need specific shims?

Valve shims are sorta generic. They do come in a number of diameters.

Your XS uses the same 29mm shims the air cooled XJs use so Chacal should be able to hook you up with whatever shims you need.

Easiest way to drain the tank is to put a hose from the fuel cock into your container and open it. I usually just leave the fuel in the tank though.
