valve adjustment reveals loose not tight spots.

    I just had the valves adjust on my 1983 xj900 seca. It surprised me to learn that my valves were on the loose side of things instead the normal tight. So I have a couple of questions:

    1. I do not know what this means.
    2. What would cause them to be loose?
    3. Should I be concerned?
    4. What might the side effects be of havling loose valves? I did notice that my fuel economy had dropped by 4MPGs. I had been getting around 42MPG. Now I am getting only 37MPGs pre-adjustment.


    Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

    loose is better than tight, without knowing the history of the bike it's a job to tell, could be that the PO did a poor job.
    How far out were they?

    These are the numbers for the valves starting with the left hand side exhaust valves and then going accross to the right hand side. Then the shim size that was used to correct it. Followed by the new corrected measurement for exhaust and intake.

    Measured Exhuast:

    .23 .20 .20 .20

    Shim:
    275-280

    Corrected:
    .18 .20 .20 .20


    Measured Intake:

    .18 .15 .15 .18

    Shim:
    280-285 280-285

    Corrected:
    .13 .15 .15 .13

    Probably wear and tear.. It's perfectly normal for valve shims to need replacing as a part of the service interval, the ones you had were not really too far out. Correct spec is .11-.15 doe inlet and .16 to .20 for exhaust.. I would think that next time you get the bike serviced, the other 5 shims will need replacing.

    Really not something to worry about.

    Cool I was mostly concerned because my fuel economy had fallin off so much. I am hope that have adjusted the valves will bring my MPG back up.

    Maybe your fuel economy has more to do with your right hand! :)

    If it's getting bad, maybe there's another fault, but your valves are spot on..
